Coinciding with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the activity is organized by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), with the collaboration of the Departments of Research and Universities and of Education and Professional Training.
As part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the eighth edition of #scientifics brings together a total of 578 researchers from public and private research entities to give simultaneous talks to 40,000 students in 6th grade of primary school and 1st grade of secondary school (aged 11 to 13), from 530 schools across Catalonia, located in 229 different municipalities. This landmark initiative for the Catalan community of female researchers and for schools aims to promote scientific and technical vocations among girls and boys and combat gender stereotypes in schools around STEM disciplines, creating close and real models of female scientists.
The eclipse of August 12 is the protagonist of this edition of #scientíficas, which has had two previous talks to open activities in Tortosa (Baix Ebre) and Reus (Baix Camp), starring Sara García Alonso, molecular biologist, researcher at the National Center for Oncological Research (CNIO) and first Spanish woman selected as a reserve astronaut by the European Space Agency (ESA).
The first event was held at the Sagrada Família Diocesan College in Tortosa, where García Alonso spoke to share the intimate story of her personal experience and career as a researcher and astronaut, also explaining the total solar eclipse that we will be able to experience in Catalonia on August 12, especially in the regions of Terres de l’Ebre and Tarragona.
Afterwards, Sara García Alonso participated in the second #scientists activity of the day: a dialogue with science teacher Maria Dolors Sans Rosich at the Puigcerver School in Reus. The event brought together 60 1st year ESO students from this Reus educational center as an audience and was also closed by the councilors Montserrat and Menor.
