"Solar eclipses and general relativity: history and present"
Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona
Thursday, 26 February 2026 I 18:00 H.
Solar eclipses have found many scientific applications throughout history, related to solar physics or celestial mechanics. Amongst all of these, however, their usefulness for verifying the validity of the theory of general relativity stands out, through Eddington’s 1919 experiment. We will discuss aspects of this experiment on the gravitational deflection of light that have not always been clarified, its implications for recent scientific projects, and the prospects for reproducing Eddington’s results during the imminent Iberian trio of solar eclipses in 2026-27-28.
